Under the guidance and leadership of Mayor Susan Fennell, councillors, managers and staff are dedicated to quality, and excel in delivering services to taxpayers in the most efficient and economical way.
The City of Brampton continues to show that commitment and community support is the foundation of its many public services and new programs. Guided by the Mayor and Members of Council, the people who make it all work are the City's 1,400 employees, a knowledgeable team who listen to residents and businesses, and who get the job done right.
The City of Brampton also demonstrated corporate excellence when it created a secure financial future for its citizens. The municipality became debt-free in 2002.
Residents can clearly see where their tax dollars are being spent as the City rolls out the following projects this year - two new fire stations, hiring 45 more firefighters, 21 new Brampton Transit buses and operators, major road repairs, extending public library hours, and hiring more department staff.
Citizens and visitors will enjoy new flowerbeds, plus major sports fields, new walkways, trails, and playgrounds.
In 2001, the City won a Peter J. Marshall Municipal Innovative Award from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) for their ground-breaking Interactive Television (iTV), and FireFLIR systems.
Brampton Fire and Emergency Services was the first fire service in Ontario to have a thermal-imaging camera mounted on every piece of professional fire-fighting equipment.
The other pioneering e-government initiative was an iTV partnership with Rogers Communications Inc., which will eventually give residents an alternative way to access the City's Web site. The site keeps the public informed about new services, policies and initiatives.
The City of Brampton has earned many awards from independent and prestigious North American associations for marketing, technology, innovation, leadership, and environmental advancements and achievements. For example, they received the National Award for Best Public Works Week Celebration in Canada, and the Home-Based Business Friendly Community Award for its Small Business Enterprise Centre.
The City of Brampton continues to be a leader in environmental initiatives. We are the first municipality in Canada to use environmentally-friendly biodiesel fuel in our fleets.
We have implemented salt reduction initiatives, such as the EPOKE technology in our winter maintenance program. As well, we have reduced the use of pesticides in our park and boulevard maintenance programs.
City employees also have opportunities to socialize and express their individual talents.
The Brampton City Singers became the first municipal choir in Canada, with members comprised entirely of City staff. More recently, the City Hall atrium showcased employees' beautiful works of art to their co-workers and to the public. Brampton is an employer of choice!
