In a recent survey, 42% of chief information officers (CIOs) polled said professional appearance is very important when evaluating job candidates. Only one in ten technology executives said it's not a critical factor.
The national poll includes responses from more than 270 CIOs from a stratified random sample of Canadian companies with 100 or more employees. It was conducted by an independent research firm and developed by RHI Consulting, a leading provider of information technology professionals on a project and full-time basis.
CIOs were asked, "How important is a professional image, including attire and personal grooming, when interviewing candidates for IT positions within your department?"
Their responses:
Very important.............. 42%
Somewhat important...... 48%
Not at all important........ 10%
"The manner in which IT specialists present themselves during the interview process is critical to their success in securing employment," said Stephen Mill, regional manager of RHI Consulting. "From the moment they walk in, the employer begins evaluating the individual on a variety of levels, including their personality and professionalism. Candidates who project a positive image will have a significant advantage over the competition."
